The platinum-palladium series East of the Sun explores fortification. Each photograph in the series moves counter-clockwise through a limestone fortress, a mechanism of defense, with no discernable scale, geography, or shape. Titled from the Norwegian fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon collected and published by folklorists Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe, the work summons this unusual re-imaging of Cupid and Psyche through a relationship between a woman and a bear. In the story the protagonists are driven by a curiosity that leads both into captivity and then allows for a reclamation of fate without divine intervention.
